UnderWaterRealm Blog WEEK 29

This week we begin construction on a DIY kino flo style light that will be battery operated and fully submersible for use in our underwater shoots!

  • Fantastic work! Can you tell me where you got the LED PCBs? I would love to have a couple dozen of those for both photographic and mood lighting.

  • Hi,
I’m also interested in the source of the PCB’s.
I may also have an idea for sealing the end of your tubes.
I mange a garden centre and we sell a material for sealing ponds and aquariums.
It is basically a material similar to silicone but designed for use in wet environments.
it will even seal underwater if required.
If you’re interested then drop me a line and I’ll put you in touch with the manufacturer..

  • Hi Guys,

We source the LEDs from a supplier in China, although we are currently
testing a few types to ensure we get the best tolerances and quality.

Once we have fully tested the system and come up with a winner we will
post the details on the website.

Kenny – I’d be really interested in learning a bit more about this sealant – could you send some details to team@realm-pictures.com

    Thanks for your interest!

  • Wow, you should definitely sell these. Really. Which filmmaker on this planet doesn’t have a use for an affordable low-energy flicker-free unbreakable hot-restrikable portable water-sealed semi-miraculous KinoFlo replacements that can be operated via mains AND battery (without a generator)? Given the choice, I might even opt for these instead of the real KinoFlos, provided that the color spectrum is comparable of course. No more need to cover all the lighting when shooting in heavy rain …

Do you have a similar cheap LED solution for hard light? Something that could be used as a replacement for a regular open face or even a fresnel?

Wish you the best of luck with your project!

  • Great video. If those PCB boards are pretty flexible, I wonder if they could be attached to a gorilla pod style articulated arm so that shapes could be formed for wrapping light around characters and objects for lighting setups like inside cars or cockpits.

  • Hey Guys,
I’m also interested in the LED Strips for Photography purposes, I’d love to make a portable ring light for all photography purposes.

I would be really interested to know where you guys found these PCB boards?

    Cheers Ed
